Hi Shannon,

Not sure if Matt still reads this thread or not. I can say that my hearing has returned about 80%. Still have regular tinnitus (not tons, but annoying), but can understand conversation in that ear. Good you got the ear shot. I know it was awful, but trust me, it's worth it. I didn't get two of those shots, but I would have if my doctor told me I needed them. See how your hearing improves though and make your decision then.

It's very different for everyone, but I can say that in my case...it did get better.

Good luck,
Scott

Hi Matt, I was just diagnosed today. Lost my hearing one week ago today. Wasted a week unfortunately with antihistamines and flonase. Just wondering how you are doing? Went to see an otolaryngologist already started steroids and the ear shot today, another treatment in one week. I would love an update can you email me if you respond?

I lost hearing in my left ear on 12/26/2010( I was at below 20%) didn't get to go to the doctor until the 30th due to the heavy snow. I have been on prednisone ever since and got my first injection last week. It is 1/25/2011 today, and my hearing tests showed very little improvement.

Hello Scott,
first - thank you for posting this. i have a google alert set up which told me about your blog by using the key words sudden hearing loss. I've also suffered a sudden hearing loss in my left ear. Fortunately for myself it is not as severe as yours but it's enough that if both ears were in that situation i would be getting fitted for hearing aids.

Second - good luck with your recovery. the distortions that i have - at around 50-60% - are pretty tough as is the tinnitus which can wake me up (i like that i have a heart beat but i dont really need to listen to it as a high pitched scratching sound all the time) :)

My HL began dec 21. I started meds (with first available appt) dec 30. i am now upping the dosage of prednisone to 80mm/day based on the rec of a good friend who i cycle with who is a otolaryngologist ((different hospital system)) - in 2 hours he spent much more thorough time talking about the various therapies available and at least i felt that i had a chance to do something. There is some discussion of some return after taking the prednisone away so watch for that one. His most encouraging word for me last night was - if the curves on your hearing chart going from lower frequency to higher frequency "go up" - it is a better prognosis for recovery. this means you've lost more of the bass sounds than the others, and for some reason statistically these folks seem to recover more of their hearing. FWIW.

I'm just offering this up to you since you took the time to care and i appreciate it. best wishes on your recovery.PS: get the MRI. mine was scheduled today. what's amazing to me - so many people get this condition (2 others in my office building = viral??) - and no one seems to notice or care much. no media to speak of, except to attempt to sell hearing devices. this is the article my dr friend pointed me to which has value. http://www.thelancetstudent.com/2010/04/09/lancet-seminar-sudden-sensorineural-hearing-loss/

Hey Matt,

Sorry, I let the thread go because of the holidays. I've posted a new update about how I'm doing here:

<a href="http://scottnath.com/2011/01/06/idiosyncratic-asymmetrical-sudden-hearing-loss-next-analysis/" title="idiosyncratic asymmetrical sudden hearing loss: next analysis" rel="nofollow">idiosyncratic asymmetrical sudden hearing loss: next analysis</a>

I'll email you too. But I can easily say, don't wait! Listen to the audiologist and do what that doctor says. Especially if it's been a while and your hearing hasn't improved you should try something else.

Good luck man.

Hi Scott - I am suffering from similar hearing issues but still not sure what is going on. I am very interested in knowing if there has been any improvement over the last couple of weeks. Originally my ENT felt that it is due to sinus issues but an audiologist I just saw thinks it is nerve damage. If you would be so kind, please email me any further information that you have. Thank you! Matt
